Union calls for guards at schools

ALL schools should have a well- armed security guard for every 300 pupils.

This was one of the resolutions made by the National Teachers’ Union (Natu) after a three-day 90th anniversary conference at Empangeni.

“For every 300 learners, there should be a security guard who can rise to the occasion should thugs and criminals invade the school,” said Musah Gumede, the union’s media liaison officer.

Last week, the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) threatened mass action over the Education Department’s failure to deploy security guards to KZN schools.

The department is expected to deploy 2 980 security guards at selected schools in the province during this financial year; however, many felt this has been slow in coming.

Education superintendent-general Cassius Lubisi was quoted by a Durban newspaper as saying that the plans for security guards are at an advanced stage and the job positions will soon be advertised.

Natu said all public schools should be properly fenced and all people entering should pass through metal detectors.

Meanwhile, Natu is still resolved to distribute condoms.

“We can’t pretend as if we live in an artificial utopia where learners are angels when the government of the day has authorised kids at the age of 12 to engage in sexual activities without consent of their parents.

We took a decision not to live in a fool’s paradise where we live in the land of denial when we bury pupils day in and day out because of government laws,” said Gumede.
