Union for ratepayers

2012-07-24 00:00

A RATEPAYERS’ union formed last week by ratepayers associations will take the government to task for failure to deliver services. The union will be launched at the Fern Hill Hotel in Howick tomorrow.

Spokesperson Richard Kelland said the union would be apolitical and would set out, as a non-profit company, to ensure improved governance and service delivery at both municipal and national levels.

It would aim to join communities around the country to establish a “grassroots movement” that would confront the government more effectively.

“An interim steering committee has already commenced with the appointment of a legal team and expert research assistants to undertake essential research into identified lists of core focal areas.”

The legal team would investigate key issues related to flawed property valuation methods, municipal budgeting, tariff policy formulation and the lack of service delivery with the aim of launching class action lawsuits on behalf of communities around the country.
