Union will push on Zungu

THE National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) will wield its power to pressure Premier Senzo Mchunu not to re-appoint Health Department head Sibongile Zungu.

The union has on record stated that Zungu, whose contract was not renewed last month, should be investigated for maladministration, nepotism and corruption.

Nehawu has also threatened to mobilise its members for a big fight if Zungu was reappointed.

“Once that happens, the union reiterates its position to render the department ungovernable and the system unworkable,” the union said in a statement last week after Zungu said she had a right to apply because she was not prohibited.

In an interview with The Witness, KwaZulu-Natal secretary Phakama Ndunakazi said yesterday the union would “pressurise” Mchunu not to re-appoint her.

“At the level of the administration she can’t lead the department,” he said.

When asked if the union was powerful enough to pressure the Premier and if they would do so, so he can enjoy their backing for future political survival, Phakama initially laughed and then said, “It is a reality”.

Zungu yesterday said she has not made a decision on whether to apply or not.

“When I feel I need to apply, I will apply,” she said.

Mchunu’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said the premier did not want to comment on the matter.

“The premier does not want to be seen to be interfering with the recruitment process that is under way and on the potential candidate,” Sibiya said.

“He wants the process of recruitment to be dignified.

The premier also wants to be seen to respect the recruitment process ...,” Sibiya said.
