ROYAL Show stalwart Gert Lotter junior, from Hofmeyr in the Eastern Cape, bred this year’s champion lamb carcass at the Royal Agricultural Show — a white dorper, which sold for R340/kg — to Willowton Meats in Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg.

The butchery also bought the reserve champion lamb, another white dorper bred by Lotter, for R150/kg; the champion European genetic carcass, an Ile de France bred by Regina Harmse, of Ermelo in Mpumalanga, for R340/kg; and the reserve champion European genetic carcass, an Ile de France bred by RU Gevers, of Blood River, for R280/kg.

The current selling price for lamb is R46/kg.

Lotter was also the breeder of champion lamb group of white dorpers, which was sold to The Meat Centre in Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg, for R60/kg.

The champion beef carcass, which achieved a score of 97,88%, was a Bovelder bred by Owen Sithole Agricultural College.

It was sold to The Meat Centre in Pietermaritzburg for R75/kg. The current selling price for beef is R32/kg.

The Meat Centre also bought the second reserve champion, an Angus from the Mark Anderson Trust, for R42/kg.

The first reserve champion beef carcass, another Bovelder, this time prepared by the students at Cedara, sold for R50/kg to Hlophe Butchery in West Street, Pietermaritzburg.

Willowton Meats bought the champion group of three beef carcasses, Bovelders from the Owen Sithole Agricultural College, for R42/kg.

The champion pig carcass and the reserve champion were bought by Ambleside Meats in Winterton. The champion went for R78/kg and the reserve for R70/kg. The normal price for pork R19/kg.

Considered by many to be South Africa’s premier red meat event, the 2014 Royal Show carcass auction took place in the Wool and Sheep Expo hall at the showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday evening.

More than 200 buyers, breeders and other interested parties attended the event, which included a pig auction for the first time. It means that the Royal has become South Africa’s only show that caters for beef, lamb and pork.
