Unique new product creates jobs and lots of interest

2008-07-17 00:00

Several local entrepreneurs who recently established a factory at iSithebe in Northern KZN have created employment for more than 30 local women through the production of an innovative hygiene product — a waterproof toilet seat cover.

Given recent hygiene issues locally, this product’s future looks bright.

The covers, known as “Loo-gienic”, are made by BEE company Clearlife.

Sebastian Stock, Clearlife’s marketing manager, said that the product is already gaining more and more interest locally and internationally.

“It is disposable, packaged in convenient purse pouches, easy to use and 100% bacteria proof,” he said.

He said the entrepreneurs had the idea about five years ago.

They acted on the idea in 2005 and were able to secure R3,6 million in funding from Gijima KZN, the EU-funded project, in partnership with the KZN Department of Economic Development. The entrepreneurs put in about R3 million worth of funding.

Loo-gienic is currently being rolled out nationally and is available at many retailers, including Pick n Pay, Clicks, Spar and Alpha Pharm.
