United: Middendorp waiting on home affairs to sign up German Alder

2011-01-13 00:00

MARITZBURG United are interested in signing German defender Christian Alder but must first wait for the player to receive his work permit from the Department of Home Affairs.

On the strength of a successful trial with United, and on the recommendation of coach Ernst Middendorp, United believe 31-year-old Alder could be the player to rectify the inconsistency the team has had in central defence this season.

Alder played for German second division team Rot Weiss Ahlen last season, who were relegated to the third division at the end of the campaign. The defender played under Middendorp in his late teens at German yoyo club Arminia Bielefeld between 1997 and 2000, through their relegation and promotion to the Bundesliga. The coach and player also teamed up at Cyprus club Anorthosis Famagusta in 2009.

“I have sent [team manager] Quintin Jettoo to Johannesburg for a few nights to handle the work permit issue, and we hope that the player will be available to sign and register before the end of the month,” United chairman Farouk Kadodia said last night.

Middendorp was reluctant to discuss the potential signing of Alder until the player’s work permit has been finalised.

The United coach said he was wary of jeopardising the deal in any way, similar to where Mpumalanga Black Aces recently announced Paul Dolezar as their coach and the Frenchman was warned of possible deportation should he lead the team in training before obtaining a work permit.
