United defence gifts Stars 3-1 win

MARITZBURG United faltered to a3-1 defeat at Woodburn Stadium last night, gifting Platinum Stars full points.

The city side soon found themselves having to chase the score after just six minutes of play as the Maritzburg defence were caught flat-footed by Dillon Sheppard’s run down the left flank.

Sheppard unselfishly set the ball up for Japanese striker, Norikazu Murikami to slot home the opener.

Maritzburg’s hopes for a comeback were dealt a blow in the 25th minute when right back, James Madidilani was red-carded following a series of reckless tackles.

However, United showed some character and started putting together some enterprising passes and took the game to their opponents.

Their efforts were rewarded when referee, Peter Mabuza gave them a penalty after he adjudged Stars’ right back, Mamadimo Masenya to have fouled Felix Obada inside his own half. Noah Chivuta converted the spot kick.

However, their joy was short-lived as Stars took the lead for the second time on the stroke of half-time with a Sheppard scorcher.

As the home crowd was cheering their side on, hoping for an equaliser, Goldman made a mistake that cost his side dearly.

The keeper was too casual in collecting a cross and the ball bounced off his hands and into the net for Stars’ third goal.
