United draw Santos in first round

MARITZBURG United have drawn Santos away in the first round of this season’s Telkom Knockout.

The tournament sees all 16 PSL sides drawn against each other in a knockout format.

Last season’s top eight PSL sides were seeded and avoided each other at yesterday’s draw, though they were not guaranteed the privilege of a home match.

United enjoyed a fantastic run in last year’s tournament before being controversially beaten by Orlando Pirates in Durban in the semi-finals. They match was originally scheduled to take place in Pietermaritzburg.

The club’s chairperson, Farouk Kadodia, has expressed his satisfaction with the draw.

“I think we could have been given a far tougher draw,” he told The Witness yesterday.

The draw means that United will face Santos in Cape Town twice in one week.

Ian Palmer’s men travel to Cape Town for a League encounter with Santos on October 28, with the first round of the Telkom Knockout kicking off on the weekend of October 21.

“It is very interesting, but I think that the Cup game will give the coach a chance to get a good look at Santos before the league encounter,” he said.

Asked about how far he thought United can go in the competition after a phenomenal start to the season, Kadodia was cautious.

“It is always difficult to say with cup games, but I think if we can get past Santos and get a home draw, then I am confident we can make the semi-finals” he said. “We are a good side at home and I am confident that our boys will give a really good fight.”
