United hardest hit by FC AK scandal

2008-05-21 00:00

MARITZBURG United’s frustration at the delay in the suspended National First Division (NFD) play-off final for promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) continues, with the postponement of the bribery appeal by FC AK.

The appeal by FC AK, who were found guilty of bribery almost a month ago and applied to take the matter to the Safa Appeals Board on May 9, started on Monday evening, but has been postponed to Sunday.

Inland Stream winners FC AK — who were booted out of the NFD to the Vodacom League, and owner Azziz Kara banned from soccer for 30 years — were to have been United’s opponents in the home-and-away NFD final on May 3 and 10.

According to the PSL, the appeal was postponed to allow for further submissions.

United chairman Farouk Kadodia said yesterday: “We are obviously very frustrated because we feel that the case has already been heard once, so what more information do the parties need? This case is not our issue, but we are the ones who are paying for it.”

Even if the case is resolved on Sunday, or early next week, the losing party still has 72 hours to apply to take the matter to arbitration. After that, an arbitration panel has to be found and a date set.

FC AK, meanwhile, have brought in leading advocate Norman Arendse to argue their case. The Cricket South Africa president recently won a case on behalf of nine regional Vodacom League runners-up, who Safa had attempted to bar from that league’s play-offs.

Maritzburg United played their last competitive match a month-and-a-half ago, on April 12.
