‘United have to dominate,’ says Walters

MARITZBURG United goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters says his side have to be dominant when they take on African Warriors in a Nedbank Cup quarter-final at the Charles Mopeli Stadium tomorrow.

Kick-off is at 3 pm.

The Team of Choice defeated Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 in the first round before eliminating Platinum Stars via penalties after the encounter had ended in a 1-1 draw.

Warriors are the only side from the National First Division left in the competition and Walters believes they should use their experience to overcome their opponents.

“We got a good draw on paper but we still have to go out there and play well,” he said.

“The fact is we have more experience and more quality than them but it won’t mean anything if we don’t back it up with hard work.”

United go into this game having played to a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City in a midweek PSL game and the shot-stopper believes they will be ready for tomorrow’s clash.

“We’ve have been playing regularly but it’s part of the business and we’ve tried to rotate the squad to keep everyone fresh,” he said.

“We have to focus on Saturday’s game and try to adapt to the conditions because the opponents will be more used to them.

“We have to try and keep the ball and look to unlock them very quickly because I believe they’ll be trying to keep things tight at the back.”

Warriors thrashed SAB Third Division side Mainstay United 8-3 in the first round before ousting fellow NFD side Milano United 1-0 in the round of 16.

David Vilakazi’s side will be coming up against a Premiership side for the first time in the competition this season but the coach believes they can rise to the occasion.

“We are happy to have come this far in the competition but we believe we can still go further,” he said. “Maritzburg United are the side standing in our way at the moment but we believe we can compete with them on the field of play.”
