United physio shocked to be dumped

2008-07-10 00:00

AFTER not agreeing terms with Ian Palmer, Maritzburg United have fired physio Debbie Mitchell, who says she was shocked to be unceremoniously dumped by the club yesterday.

Mitchell said United informed her that the new coaching staff will have their own physio staff.

She said yesterday: “It came as a complete shock. I will be going to a labour lawyer to find out what my rights are.

“Like Ian said, at no stage did he ever have reason to complain about me, so on what grounds can they just fire me? I didn’t come as part of the technical team, so why must I go?

“I am a single mother who needs a salary.

“I was brought from the Eastern Cape, and now they tell me that I have two weeks to move out of the flat they were paying for.

“Last week when I went to see [chairman] Farouk [Kadodia] to receive my bonus, he said they would be keeping me. With that bonus, I paid off my studies because I didn’t know I would not have a job.”

She said the reasons given for her dismissal bring into question the club’s denial that they gave Palmer the cold shoulder because they were talking to other coaches.

“If they could not agree terms with Ian just two days ago, then how can they already know who the new coaching staff will be?” she said.

“The unity between the coaching staff, myself and the players was the reason for the club’s success, and they have just destroyed that. It seems they obviously have not learnt from their past mistakes.”
