United retain star players

MARITZBURG United have announced that two of their most experienced players have signed new contracts with the club.

Right back Peter Petersen has signed a one-year extension with the Team of Choice, while left back and holding midfielder Ruben Cloete, who was on loan from Orlando Pirates, signs a permanent deal.

Petersen was confident ahead of the new season, saying they would go from strength to strength.

“We work hard for each other on and off the pitch. I’m looking forward to an enjoyable and successful year,” he said.

“I think once you come here, you find it is different to a lot of clubs and it’s a great place to play your football.”

For former Buccaneer and two- time league champion Cloete, there was never a doubt that he would be staying in Maritzburg for another year, adding that the Team of Choice would have nothing to fear in the coming season.

“I’m looking forward to the first game of the season. We have to make Harry Gwala Stadium like a fortress and if we can continue that from last season, we will do very well in this campaign,” said Cloete.

The club recently strengthened their attack with the signing of Thokozani Sekotlong from AmaTuks and Ajax Cape Town’s Nhlanhla Vilakazi.

However, the club lost the services of former Mamelodi Sundowns and Namibia player Ronnie Kanalelo, who was serving as goalkeeper coach.

Kanalelo started his new role as the assistant coach for the Namibian national team yesterday and chairperson Farook Kadodia thanked him for his association with the club.

“I would like to thank him for his contribution to Maritzburg United, and wish him well in his future,” said the chairperson.

The club announced that they were now looking to bring in a replacement to fill in the position.

United will begin the new campaign with a home game against newly promoted Polokwane City.
