United to play more games in PE

2012-08-03 00:00

THE fixtures for the upcoming PSL season were released yesterday and they revealed that Maritzburg United will play three more matches at PE’s Nelson Mandela Bay stadium this season.

The Team of Choice will “host” Orlando Pirates on December 14, Mamelodi Sundowns on February 15 and then Moroka Swallows on April 26 at the 2010 World Cup venue.

While a figure has not yet been confirmed, United chairperson Farouk Kadodia said he expected the club to receive R700 000 for each of the matches.

“We didn’t want to move the Kaizer Chiefs game away after we did last season, so we are happy that we have managed to keep that game in Pietermaritzburg,” he told The Witness yesterday.

United hosted Chiefs, Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic at the “Bay” in the 2011/12 season.

While the three PE games were largely expected, Kadodia expressed his satisfaction with the way the rest of the fixture list looked.

“There are more games on Friday nights than there were last season and less midweek games, which we are happy about,” he said.

“We now have a chance to bring back that vibe were Pietermaritzburg used to enjoy their Friday night football.”

The squad recently returned from a pre-season tour of Johannesburg where they played matches against SuperSport United, Moroka Swallows and FC AK.

“It was a good trip for the guys and very encouraging, but it was tough because the squad that travelled was small,” said Kadodia.

Absent from the touring party was central midfielder Chillies Madondo, who was being disciplined by the club for skipping training after declaring that he wanted to be transferred. With that disciplinary process now complete, Kadodia said Madondo would need to work hard to get back in the first team picture.

“He has missed training so he will now have specialised attention to get him up to speed physically,” said Kadodia.

“But he will have to show remorse and win back the trust of his team-mates — we can’t allow the player to come back so easily.”

Three weeks has been earmarked as a potential return date for Madondo, meaning he is likely to miss United’s season opener away to the University of Pretoria next weekend.

In other team news, the transfer saga of Mor Diouf finally appears to be nearing completion. It is thought that the club is on the verge of signing all the necessary paperwork to allow the player to move away from Harry Gwala, though Kadodia would not confirm anything yesterday.

“We will have finality on the matter by the end of the weekend,” said Kadodia
