United to use Woodburn

2008-07-31 00:00

After several weeks of speculation, Maritzburg United’s chairman Farouk Kadodia has finally confirmed his side’s “home ground” for the PSL season.

With the Harry Gwala currently undergoing a revamp for the 2010 World Cup, United have finally reached agreement to use Woodburn Stadium for the 2008/09 season.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Kadodia said the PSL had given the green light to the city stadium, which is currently used for rugby matches.

“The facilities at Woodburn have been okayed by the PSL, and we will be using it as our base from the end of September,” Kadodia said.

The United chairman also said they have two other optional venues should Woodburn be unavailable.

“We also have the option of using the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale and the Absa Stadium in Durban for high-profile games,” he said.

The high-profile games that Kadodia was referring to include the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, who United host in September.

That match will take place at the Absa Stadium, due to its higher capacity and efficient security measures.

Kadodia also allayed fears regarding the playing turf at Woodburn, which is traditionally thicker for rugby matches.

“There are plans to sort that out and the stadium will definitely be ready for us come the end of September,” he said.

These plans means top-class football will be on view in the city.
