United’s Bester due to take on Bafana as a player for Namibia

LIVELY Maritzburg United attacking midfielder Rudolf Bester aims to transfer his current impressive club form to the Namibian team as they seek to upset Bafana Bafana in an international friendly at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Wednesday night.

Bester, signed at the beginning of the season, is one of players who has contributed immensely to United’s resurgence under coach Ernst Middendorp.

“It’s a nice feeling to be playing Bafana Bafana at a crucial time when both countries have important tasks,” the midfielder said this week.

“Bafana are preparing for the World Cup and we are also in a rebuilding process and are preparing to to do well in the African Cup of Nations in 2012. We have a good coach from Belgium [Tom Saintfiet]. I think, since we are on this mission, playing against teams like Bafana Bafana is the best way to go.”

Bester, who has previously been on the books of Serbian side FK Cukaricki Stankom and Namibia’s Blue Waters, said for some of his Brave Warriors team-mates, playing Bafana is a dream come true.

It will be the second time Bester will come up against South Africa, having been fielded when Nambia narrowly lost 1-0 in Windhoek two seasons ago.

He says there’s not much comparison to the Bafana that beat them last time around.

“The team we lost to was led by Pitso Mosimane, who is still in the squad as the assistant coach, but you can see that coach Carlos Parreira’s approach is being used by Bafana. We are expecting a tough game, but we will give it our best shot,” said Bester, who has over 30 international caps.

Bafana should be wary of the likes of former Sundowns and Moroka Swallows leftback Sydney Plaatjies, Platinum Stars striker Henrico Botes and ex-Ajax Cape Town midfielder Quinton Jacobs, who who are dangerous when left unchecked.

On his impressive form, Bester did not want to blow his own trumpet, instead attributing this to team-work at the Team of Choice.

“You know it’s been a tough season for us, but we have always kept our heads high. Personally I am happy with my current form, but believe I could also improve.

“I just hope that I continue to deliver for my country as I am trying my best here at Maritzburg,” said Bester, who was part of Namibian squad that took part in the African Cup of Nations in Ghana 2008.
