United’s Palmer named top PSL coach

2011-10-14 00:00

IT was a day to remember for Maritzburg United yesterday as Ian Palmer became the first manager in the club’s history to be awarded the coveted PSL coach of the month for August and September.

Palmer has guided United to third position on the PSL log after seven rounds of fixtures and are undefeated in the league so far.

SuperSport United’s Gavin Hunt, who has also not tasted defeat this season, finished a close second.

The award was adjudicated by a panel of six judges, most of them journalists. The same panel awarded SuperSport striker Atusaye Nyondo the PSL player of the month award.

Palmer said he was delighted to receive the award and confessed that he has never been honoured in this way before.

He said, “Obviously I’m very happy to have achieved this and personal achievements are always great.

“But we need to remember that we are only seven games into the season. I wish that we would be in the same position after 27 games.”

Palmer gave the credit to his players, saying they had displayed a great mental approach in the early part of the season.

“The players have self-belief and they all want to win and keep winning,” he said.

Speaking about what he thinks he and the team can achieve in the future, Palmer was optimistic.

“I think for the team a top eight finish will be good enough.”

“And for me, I don’t know; hopefully this won’t be my last major award.

“Who knows where it will go? Possibly to become the national team coach, you never know.”

United travel to Pretoria tonight for a PSL battle with SuperSport United.
