Uniting for Africa’s big six

2010-05-26 00:00

IN an effort to galvanise support for the six African teams participating in the World Cup, Hola 6 Pack was launched yesterday.

After many hard-fought battles on the pitch, six countries from Africa managed to qualify. Since then Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan has repeatedly asked local and international fans to “support Africa’s six-pack”.

A group of young South African- based entrepreneurs led by Bonolo Sekhukhune, Joey Khuvultu and Terry Behan recently got together to figure out how to pull all Africans together under one banner.

They asked the simple question: “How do we mobilise all Africans to support the continent’s ownership and participation in this historic event?”

From here, Hola 6 Pack was born — a campaign to rally support for all six participating African teams under one banner.

On Africa Day yesterday, Hola 6 Pack announced its presence to the world. Its objective: to get Africans, South Africans and those wishing to support Africa collectively behind Africa’s participation in the World Cup and give Africa one voice, one presence and one symbol.

Khuvultu, the spokesperson, said: “Hola 6 Pack will make its presence felt in several ways.

“There will be Hola 6 Pack parties hosted at different locations around South Africa before and during the World Cup, where Hola 6 Pack supporters can congregate.”

He said local and African musicians will get together this weekend to record a Hola 6 Pack track celebrating Africa’s participation.

Hola 6 Pack gear will be available at selected retailers and through the informal traders’ network.

The campaign will also be a presence at the stadiums where all the major African team games will be played.

The Hola 6 Pack logo, designed by local graphic artists Ayanda Nkungu and Hayden Hochfelden, symbolises African unity, strength, purpose and passion. The shield, with all six country flags, represents unity and strength, the spears represent purpose and the vuvuzelas represent our passion as a people.
