Uniting people with the world

2008-05-02 00:00

It was Friday morning, the fog had lifted to the sight of the beautiful hills that surround our town. The suns rays slowly crept into my room, as I readied myself for school.

The roads were not particularly busy (in fact, they never are busy and apart from the morning school traffic you can sunbathe on them without fear). Welcome to Greytown.

It was a particularly hyped-up day for us townsfolk as an estimated 35 000 men would be converging on our town for the annual Christian Mighty Men Conference (MMC) and, with the biggest tent in the world being erected on a farm just outside Greytown, this was guaranteed to be big. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought that anything bearing the status of “the world’s biggest, largest or best” would be found here; well I guess I was wrong.

After an early return from our minuscule school where we prepared it to house around 300 men I got ready for prayers at the local mosque. As we exited the mosque we got caught up in a jam.

Wait, did I say a jam? Yes, a traffic jam, snaking all the way to our house. The sight of thousands of cars with an assortment of registration plates and even nationalities greeted us.

Never in my life have I seen so many cars in Greytown. Some people were even praying on the side of the road while waiting to get to Shalom (where it would all take place). Roads that see an average of 100 cars a day were as busy as highways and roads leading to Greytown were near capacity.

An estimated 60 000 men attended eventually and even used planes to get here. Yes, we do have a small private landing strip. They were accommodated wherever suitable, and what an overwhelming sight it was indeed.

Back at home while listening to the rumble of a plethora of motor vehicle engines I glanced back down at a facebook blog by some demented person expressing his anger at the world and its problems. This made me think about all the carnage, hunger and corruption this world is facing and how immorality is a contributing factor to this.

If you think about it, morals are what have kept civilisation sane through the ages. This then set my mind going on how religious, gatherings, like the MMC and those held by all other religions unite people in a struggle with the world for the world. It is this combined spirituality that can create peace and repentance and sometimes even war, but those are in altogether different circumstances.

Peace and problem-solving are what this world needs and unity is the essential ingredient to this. Another way to attain unity is by simply having respect for other people’s spiritual beliefs; in this way we can live peacefully and solve our common tasks, goals and problems.

We need to be especially sure to avoid stereotyping as this can hurt others and lead to violence (an example of this is myself being labelled a terrorist because I am Muslim even though I’ve never murdered a human being). But I cannot help but smile when I hear of large religious gatherings like this one as they tell me this world may still have an inkling of hope left.
