Unpublicised hip-hop fest causes havoc on Florida Rd

2014-01-06 00:00

THE level of noise in Florida Road was agonising for many restaurant patrons and residents during a live concert held on open ground opposite Italian restaurant Spiga d’Oro on Saturday.

The restaurant manager, Sam Makumire, said the noise was “very, very loud”.

“Our customers could not enjoy the sunny weather because they couldn’t stand sitting at the outside tables.”

Yesterday, the eThekwini Metro was in the dark about who organised the hip-hop festival, while residents and local eateries fumed about the loud noise and litter.

Makumire said he was surprised when the organisers started erecting tents on Friday night, and claims they were not informed about any event.

“Some of the customers were angry … There was no control whatsoever,” Makumire added. The Italian restaurant had to switch off their music because the concert’s rap music was deafening. He said the concert started around 11 am and finished at about 11 pm. There were also parades.

His customers would just eat and leave, while others just walked out.

Keys on Florida, a cocktail bar, said they were also unaware there was going to be a concert, “because there were no posters on the streets” to inform them about it.

eThekwini municipal head of communication Tozi Mthethwa said they don’t know who organised the concert. She said she checked with Durban Tourism and they also had no knowledge. “If it was our party, it would probably be on our events guide. But it isn’t. I’ll have to check when I get to the office today.”
