Unstoppable Jean Farr (84) shines in line-dancing exam

PIETERMARITZBURG local Jean Farr (84) recently took part in the bronze diploma line-dancing exam in Durban, in which she received a highly commended pass.

Farr was a member of the tap-dancing group for the elderly, Golden Entertainers, for around 10 years, which she said was “great fun”.

“When I retired from dancing two years ago, I started missing it immediately. That drove me to register for the line-dancing exams this year. During the competition I think I was the oldest participant.

“That never made me feel awkward about myself or doubt my dance routines.

“Maybe that’s because dancing has always been an important part of my life. I took ballet and ballroom dancing when I was young,” she said.

Farr said that this achievement was to prove to herself that she can still dance. She highlighted physical and mental health as important assets as one gets older.

“It is very important that when people retire they keep active — physically and mentally — and keep an interest in life. At my age I tend to take things more easily and I am looking forward to the next 16 years of my life.”

She added that next year she will travel to London to watch the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April.

“I would not miss it for the world. I also witnessed Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding in 1952.

“I absolutely love the royal family and love travelling around the world.

“I have been to Russia, England, China, Iceland, Canada and New York. It is great to learn about other people and find out how they live.”
