Unwanted:‘Baby Safe’ launch at mall

2010-10-23 00:00

THE Baby Safe initiative will be launched at Liberty Midlands Mall this weekend.

The initiative aims to prevent unwanted babies from being left for dead by providing an anonymous way for mothers to hand over their babies into care.

One of the founders of the initiative, Rene Morcom, said she was inspired to act by the shocking statistics of babies being dumped.

She said the CBD and greater Edendale are the main areas where babies are dumped in Pietermaritzburg and they are pleased that they have been donated a second baby safe for Edendale.

The first baby safe will be at St Paul’s church at the bottom of Langalibalele Street, and construction starts next week.

Once a baby has been placed in the baby safe, the project monitors are notified by voice call, and a safety back-up system confirms that the baby has been collected.

Babies rescued though the baby safe will be cared for at a safe house in an undisclosed location in Pietermaritzburg until an adoption can take place — this takes four to 12 months.

“We are currently connecting with adoption agencies both in South Africa and throughout the world,” Morcom said.

Morcom urged people to help the project by donating money or baby items, which can be handed over at the mall this weekend.
