Up-and-comiong stars on show at Khaya Majola Cricket Week

2014-12-18 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s best U19 players are on show at the Khaya Majola Cricket Week in Pretoria, where the first rounds of matches were played yesterday.

It was a day that saw most encounters end in a draw, the only results coming in the Easterns against North West clash, the latter winning on the first innings, and Namibia outclassing Griquas.

The KZN side looked promising in their match against Northerns, having the upper hand when stumps were called. Playing at Pretoria Boys’ High School, KZN captain Bruce Kerr called correctly and opted to take guard first.

Northerns took wickets at regular intervals, preventing the KZN middle order batsmen making any scores of substance. Tafara Mupariwa (43), Jerome Bossr (44), Michael Hay (20) and Dolphins all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo (21) all enjoyed solid starts without being allowed to take control of the innings. Their contributions were the Lions share in KZN’s 171 all out in 50.4 overs. Best with the ball for Northerns was left-arm spinner Stefan Klopper who finished with an outstanding 7-35 in 13.4 overs from an outstanding display of slow bowling.

With ball in hand, the six KZN bowlers used put the screws on the Northern batsmen who ground out just 86 runs for the loss of six wickets from 43 overs. As with KZN, some batsmen looked threatening – Dean Foxcroft (24) and Kabelo Raseleka (23) – but they were the only strikers to venture beyond 20 as the KZN lads bowled a controlled line and length. Wickets were shared, with right-arm quick Jesse Smit the best with 2-10 in nine overs.

KZN Inland drew with Eastern Province but not before amassing a strong 254 all out in 64.2 overs at Memorial Park. Hero with the bat was Stephen Reeves whose undefeated 80 batting at number eight gave the innings the impetus it needed. Opener Sohail Mahmoud added a solid 53 and Brandan Tattam 30.

In reply, EP were on 121-7 after 53 overs, medium-pacer Lungi Ngidi grabbing 2-17 in his nine overs.

The highest team score of the day came from Western Province who posted 284-6 in 67 overs, star of the show being Kyle Verreynne who scored an undefeated 100.
