Up and running: 2012 marathon launched

2011-11-05 00:00

THE 2012 Weekend Witness Maritzburg Marathon, powered by Clover, was launched on Thursday. It is sponsored by hospitality partners the Protea Hotel Imperial.

The race starts outside Merchiston School at 5 am on Sunday, February 26. Entries are open on the official race website, www.pmb42.co.za.

Race director John Hall said that although the event is organised by unpaid volunteers, participants have come to expect standards equal to big-budget marathons like the Comrades, Two Oceans and the Soweto Marathon.

Despite the huge disparity between the cost of staging the event — expected to be around R1,2million —and the expected entry income of just over R400 000, the race entry fees will be maintained at R120 for the marathon and R80 for the shorter distance.

Hall said the weekend will be extended to accommodate the fun runs, traditionally held at the Carbineers Drill Hall on the Saturday before the main event. The MaraFun series will have races over 2,1 km and 4,2 km, 210 m and 420 m, with a 42 m toddler trot and 21 m “nappy crawl”.

The package of events will be hosted at five venues around Pietermaritzburg on the five consecutive weekends leading up to the event, culminating in the regular pre-race Saturday at the Drill Hall.
