Upgraded clinic a community boon

2014-08-01 00:00

AFTER spearheading a R22 million refurbishment of Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Health Sciences clinic, Professor Lina Puckree was confident it would benefit the community.

As the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Puckree believed the facility would aid students in getting more practical experience.

“Our clinic has state-of-the-art facilities that could compete with the private sector. The clinic can now cater for more patients; has ultra sound; X-ray units and dental chairs among other things.”

Puckree added the clinic would offer services at a discounted rate for those who cannot afford medical treatment or even wanted to have a different experience.

The refurbished clinic, expected to service 25 to 150 patients weekly, was officially opened by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande at the Ritson campus on Wednesday.

The refurbishment of the clinic came after the Department of Higher Education funded the R22 million to the university through an infrastructure grant.

Puckree said lecturers within her department would supervise students who were performing any procedure and saw it as their way of giving back to the community.

The clinic would offer chiropractic, homeopathy, somatology, dental and radiography services at a discounted rate or for free.

“We want our students to have this hands-on experience, not only theory. We want to add more facilities to this, like stress and youth care centres,” said Puckree.
