Ups and downs for Midlands U20s

2008-05-01 00:00

There was one win and two defeats for the Midlands U20 rugby sides at Woodburn on Tuesday night.

The Midlands A and B teams were up against their Old Boys counterparts in the U20A and U20B Division matches, while Midlands D — now known as PMB Waratahs U20 — beat Queensburgh 15-12.

The Midlands A and B teams were in for a tough game against the Old Boys teams, that are full of contracted players.

In the early game, Midlands B opened the scoring through Guy Anderson under the posts. Unfortunately the conversion was missed, partly due to a missing kicking tee.

Soon after, Bryden Glasgow went over for a try converted by Jarred Cairns, leaving Midlands B 12-0 up, but Old Boys B struck back with a penalty and two tries.

The Midlands B team kept in touch, with another try by Guy Anderson converted by Cairns. Trailing by 13 points with five minutes left, Midlands scored their bonus point fourth try to go down 32-24, missing out on another bonus point by finishing just outside the seven-point losing radius.

Midlands A, brave and with a never-say-die attitude, struggled against a quality Old Boys A team. A Ross Ashton penalty was the Midlands contribution to a half-time score of 35-3 that included five Old Boys tries.

The Midlands D team defended like Trojans, only conceding two tries in the second half, and were rewarded with a try in the last five minutes after good defensive work resulted in a turnover and Conal Levin broke the line to score under the posts and convert for a 52-10 final score.
