Use your loaf: BAKE YOUR OWN

2008-01-19 00:00

Producing bread in bulk should be much cheaper than making it at home, right? Wrong!

The recent increases in the price of bread may have left you wondering whether it is cheaper to make a loaf in your oven at home rather than heading off to the supermarket.

Kloof cookery school owner and caterer Meryl Haley bakes her own bread every day and has been doing so for years.

Her reasons are mainly based on health factors, but with the increase in the price of bread, Weekend Witness asked whether there are financial advantages to baking your own bread.

Haley makes her bread in a bread machine and it costs about R2,86 per loaf (excluding the cost of electricity). The loaf weighs 420 g compared to a 700 g Albany loaf of unsliced brown bread costing R5,59 (according to Pick n Pay online).

The loaf can be cut into 14 slices — enough for lunch sandwiches for a family of four.

The recipe for homemade bread baked in the oven makes a loaf that is about the same weight as the Albany bread and costs R3,84 per loaf (excluding the cost of electricity).

Ingredients such as fresh rosemary and olives, or cheese and mixed herbs can be added, or the loaf simply sprinkled with seeds, although this would increase the cost of the loaf.

Haley says: “I’d rather know for certain what is inside the bread that my family and I are eating and I do like the advantage of having fresh bread every day. These reasons, together with the price increase, convince me that making my own bread is the way to go.”
