Usuthu hope to carry league form to Telkom Cup

MARC van Heerden is hoping AmaZulu can carry their good early season League form over to the Telkom Knock-out Cup this weekend.

Usuthu travel to Free State Stars in the last 16 match tomorrow in good spirits after winning three and drawing two of their opening six League matches.

Van Heerden, who made his AmaZulu debut five years ago, says he is not surprised by how well they are doing this season.

“No, I’m not really surprised,” he told “We made lots of good signings at the start of the season because we are determined to challenge for silverware.

“We have proven what we are capable of over the last few games, but now the key is to maintain that standard. There’s no point starting like a house on fire and then finishing low down.”

However, such has been the nature of the 2013/14 season with international breaks, cup competitions and rescheduling to accommodate Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League campaign, that AmaZulu will have to wait more than a month to build on their fourth place in the League.

In fact, the Durban side last played on September 21 in the 1-1 draw against SuperSport United, and Van Heerden admits the long breaks don’t help their positive momentum.

“It’s tough to keep motivated and of course it’s hard to keep our momentum going, but the guys are quite chilled about it,” he said.

“With the international breaks … that’s just how it is, so we’ve got on with it and have played some friendlies. The spirit remains very high.”

The task is equally tough for Golden Arrows, who travel to Johannesburg tonight where they meet Gavin Hunt’s Wits at Bidvest Stadium.

Arrows have had an inconsistent start to the campaign and have lost four of their six league matches to date to sit in 13th position. Wits, touted by many as title contenders this season, are three points behind the log leaders with a game in hand.
