Uvongo’s latest victim found

2011-02-28 00:00

THE body of Bongani Mathabela (25), who drowned after being swept off the rocks alongside the Uvongo lagoon on February 20, was recovered by an SAPF search and rescue team on Friday last week.

Searches for the body earlier in the week had proved unsuccessful.

A phone call was made to 10111 in the early hours of Friday morning after the caller spotted the body at the mouth of the lagoon. By the time the officers of the Search and Rescue unit arrived the body had floated into the lagoon itself.

It usually takes three or four days for a submerged body to float to the surface of the water.

Bongani’s brother, Mandla Mathabela, was with him when the tragedy took place. Mandla said that he and the family are happy that Bongani’s body was found.

“We are happy. I have not seen the body yet but I will be going to do that today [Friday],” he said. “We are all really battling with what happened but we will be okay.”

It is believed that Bongani’s body had been washed out to sea before being washed back into the mouth of the lagoon on Friday morning.

The Uvongo lagoon has claimed the lives of three people in recent months, with only two of their bodies being recovered.

The body of Thobeka Hendry is yet to be found.
