Uys's stage show to be on DVD, TV

2009-03-23 00:00

MASTER satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys and film producer Anant Singh have teamed up to release Uys's latest stage hit, Elections & Erections, on DVD and television, with Singh's company, Videovision Entertainment, having shot the show.

Elections & Erections, which began its national tour in Durban on February 17, will end its run in Cape Town on May 2.

The DVD will be released by Next Video and will be available from all leading retail outlets countrywide from March 27, while the television broadcast date will be announced soon.

The show takes audiences on a personal journey with Uys and his alter ego, Evita Bezuidenhoudt, as they celebrate the two issues that were illegal for most of Uys's life in South Africa: democracy and sex.

Uys also presents a host of familiar and upcoming politicians and opinion makers, from the Clintons and Obamas in the United States to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, old Nats, reinvented communists and designer democrats.

Uys invited Singh to be a guest star at one of his shows in Durban and Singh saw the potential in the DVD market because the content deals with current topics, especially the upcoming general elections, affecting all South Africans.

He presented the idea to Uys, who immediately agreed to an elaborate multi-camera shoot with director Junaid Ahmed directing the shoot at the Sneddon Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Durban campus.

Uys said: "When Anant mentioned the idea of recording the show for a DVD release, I was really excited and I am pleased to have concluded the rights deal with Anant and Videovision Entertainment.

"I believe that all South Africans would enjoy Elections & Erections and the DVD release will ensure that the show is accessible to a lot more people."
