VIPs pledge support for MEC’s race

2011-05-28 00:00

HIGH profile guests from the athletic and medical fraternities pledged their support for KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, as he attempts the Comrades Marathon tomorrow in a bid to raise funds.

Dhlomo will attempt the 89 km race to support three projects: The KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital (to which he will donate 50% of proceeds); the Sibusiswe Comprehensive Technical High School in Amajuba (to which he will donate 30% to the science laboratory); and the Phumanathi Athletics club (to which he will donate 20%).

In the MEC’s briefing at the old Addington Children’s Hospital on Thursday, he stressed the importance of being healthy and striving to live a long, productive life.

“HIV/Aids and tuberculosis are among the most notorious killers in the African population, but a lesser known killer are non communicable diseases — which is attributed to a lack of exercise and poor eating habits,” said Dr Dhlomo.

Bonitas has pledged R50 000, while Discovery Health sponsored athletic clothes to the value of R50 000 to Dr Dhlomo’s club, Phumanathi Athletics. The club comprises development runners, many of whom will attempt the Comrades for the first time tomorrow.

Johannesburg-based businessman Dr Mdu Gama, formerly of the Amajubu township, also committed to building a mobile science lab for the Sibusiswe Comprehensive Technical High School on condition that the MEC finishes the race, something Dr Dhlomo is confident about.
