VUnited, city confirm R36?million support

2014-08-05 00:00

THE partnership between Maritzburg United and the Msunduzi Municipality will see the PSL football club receiving R36  million over the next three years.

This was confirmed at a breakfast at the city hall yesterday where mayor Chris Ndlela and United chairperson Farouk Kadodia spoke publicly on the relationship for the first time.

“We believe that this will be a long-lasting marriage,” Ndlela said. “This is a relationship that has the potential to be a resounding success. It is a partnership that is for the people of Pietermaritzburg — young and old.”

United had been offered a lucrative deal to relocate to Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this season — the second time they had been approached by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in three years.

“It is true that we received an offer from PE,” said Kadodia. “But this is the city where our hearts lie. We have history here, we have businesses here and we have families here.”

Kadodia said that he was delighted to finally have the support of local government and added that the financial injection would go a long way towards providing a platform for the Team of Choice to be more competitive in the coming season.

“The truth of the matter is that it is financial muscle that is required for a team to be competitive and win silverware,” added Kadodia.

United finished last season in 10th position on the PSL table and begin their 2014/15 campaign with a trip away to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night.
