TWO men appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with three murders and an attempted murder at Sacca informal settlement in Mkondeni last year.

The Witness has previously reported that the victim of the attempted murder, Thokozani Mkhize, reported that his assailant had shot him in the arm and thereafter “drank” the blood that gushed from his arm.

He allegedly dipped some bread he had taken from the victim into the blood and ate it.

In court yesterday were Njabulo Welcome Gwala (22) of an unknown address and Bongani Richboy Gwala (53) of Imbali.

According to police, they are father and son.

According to the charge sheet, they are charged with the murders of Vusi Magwenyana (38), Dumisani Khumalo (44) and Mlondolozi Mbanjwa at the Sacca informal settlement on December 16 last year.

Njabulo Gwala is also charged with the attempted murder of Thokozani Mkhize by “firing shots at him”.

Bongani Gwala faces a charge of unlawful possession of a .38 special revolver.

State prosecutor Khulekani Mncube opposed bail.

The case was postponed to February 17.
