IRVETTE van Blerk of Nedbank set a new course record for the Totalsports Women’s day 10 km in Johannesburg yesterday, leading from the gun to tape in 35min:31sec. This was Van Blerks third successive defence of the race.

Noleen Conrad from University of Johannesburg was second in 37min:40sec, and only just holding off Christine Kalmer.

It is expected that at least four of the top six will come down to compete in the Durban leg of the Spar series which is being organized by the new Chesterville Spar club.

Entries are taken at Spar and Superspar Stores throughout the province and online at

The Durban Spar race, which will take place on August 29, has a past record of 17 000 runners for the five and 10 km distances, and attracts women of all ages and abilities.

Vusi Mnyandu became the victor of the first post-Comrades marathon in the province when he took 2hr:25min to complete Sunday’s Verulam Challenge. Richard Nene came second and Eric Ngubane was third.

Despite a slow 3hr:31min winning time, Boxer’s Iris Ndlovu was untroubled in her tour of the course with Nedbank’s Eunice Ntuli and Nonhlanhla Slante taking a leisurely jaunt that saw them finish in 4:07 and 4:08 respectively.

In the associated half marathon the honours went to the talented Nunyawazi Jari from the Bluff Meats Formula One club who crossed the line in 1hr:7min. Jari’s club-mate Xolani Nzimande secured the second podium step ahead of Gerald Nunetsi.

Sandy de Beer won the ladies half marathon in 93 minutes.

Nedbank’s Bernard Phaletsane won the annual Mtunzini Bush 16 km in 1hr:1min:13sec, leaving local athletes Innocent Nyawonse and Phila Nene to fight out the lower placings.

Noncembo Mthethwa won the ladies race in 1hr:18min:44sec.
