Van Vuuren back in KZN Inland squad

2009-02-19 00:00

THE chances of KZN Inland having a successful weekend in Pretoria were given a boost with the inclusion of experienced all-rounder and former captain Andre van Vuuren in the 13-man squad for the SA Airways Provincial Challenge fixtures against Northerns.

Van Vuuren has missed Inland's last two outings due to work pressures, and his return helps to some extent in offsetting the loss of quality fast bowler Ollie Humphries (university commitments).

Player/coach Doug Watson said from the Pretoria University Oval yesterday that Inland have also left out seam bowler Jomo Mbili of Woodlands-based club Lancashire for the promising Devon Ryland of Northern Districts.

"Northerns are a strong union and they take the performances of their Provincial Challenge side very seriously, so we know we are in for a tough, competitive three-dayer [starts today] and the 45-over match on Sunday," the former KZN Dolphins and South Africa A opening batsman told The Witness yesterday.

"It will provide the Inland side with a stern test in all departments," said Watson. "The build-up this week hasn't been ideal as far as practising outdoors is concerned, but we have been fortunate to utilise the facilities at Neil Johnson and Richard Ford's indoor cricket school."

Watson said the Inland squad enjoyed a solid session at Tukkies yesterday afternoon and were in a determined mood.

* KZN Coastal have included the Dolphins' David Miller in their side to take on Gauteng at the Chatsworth Oval.

Miller has just come back from a serious back injury and although the powerful young left-hander only got single figures in his return match for Chatsworth Sporting, the first ball he faced soared for six before a reported rough decision sent him back to the pavilion.
