Van Vuuren knocking on selectors’ door with brilliant performances

2011-11-03 00:00

SEVERAL cricketers gave the provincial selectors a nudge with outstanding performances in KZN Premier League weekend matches.

Former Inland all-rounder Morné van Vuuren would surely be seriously considered should he make himself available, but work commitments are likely to rule him out.

His runs and wickets against Lancashire ensured a win for his new club, Midlands, despite Inland opening bowler Brady Barends’s efforts.

Suhail Razack might be in line for his first provincial cap after a fifer in Varsity’s comfortable defeat of his former side, Ladysmith, while Tyler Lortan’s ton could be enough for him to retain his place, and Brent Kay continues to impress as Standard accounted for Young Natalians with ease.

After a five-wicket loss to Simplex RHCSC, the Maritzburg Cricket Association XI lie seventh in the 10-team KZN Women’s League, while Cherri Cannon continues her good form.

Meanwhile, in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge, KZN Inland are propping up the bottom of the table in 14th place with 8,94 points after two successive losses.

A note of encouragement is that they are within six points of the side in ninth position and just two points behind the team lying third-last (with a game in hand).

Gauteng lead the three-day competition with 46,48 points from three outings, followed by Inland’s two conquerors Western Province and South Western Districts.

Inland are positioned fourth in the Coastal Stream of the T20 Challenge, despite both their games being abandoned due to weather, giving them two “no-result” points from each fixture.

WP lead the coastal stream log with 10 points from three outings. The Inland Stream T20 log sees leaders Northerns just ahead of North West.

Inland players have one more round of club matches on November 13 before their next Provincial Challenge weekend against Eastern Province at the Oval from November 17 to 20.

EP lie fourth-last in the three-day competition and second in the Coastal Stream of the T20 Challenge with two wins from two.

There are no KZN Inland club fixtures this weekend due to the 1-Day Cup match between the Sunfoil Dolphins and Chevrolet Warriors at the Oval this Sunday, November 6.
