Van Vuurens step up for Inland

2008-10-23 00:00

THE Van Vuurens, Andre and Morne, put KZN Inland in front on day one of the three-day SA Airways Provincial Challenge match against Free State at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Play ended with 42 overs lost (bad light). Inland were 14 for nought chasing Free State’s first-innings 169 after Ross McMillan won the toss.

Andre’s medium-pace swing destroyed the FS top-order, with four wickets from the Dusi End and two from Park Drive End for figures of 6-31 in 17.1 overs. He made the breakthrough with the fourth ball of his first over, the ninth of the innings, trapping in-form Divan van Wyk lbw.

Van Wyk, the only player in this match in the SA Provincial Challenge XI to meet Bangladesh in Kimberley on November 15-16, was replaced by FS captain Jonathan Beukes. The skipper and opener Letlotlo Sesele were back in the hut within two overs.

The unlucky McMillan was rewarded for an excellent opening spell when Inland’s slips went up for caught behind and umpire Adri Crawford considered before delivering — Sesele clearly disagreed.

Andre persuaded Beukes to play too early before his swing snagged Griffin Nieuwoudt in his crease.

Humphries, after straying to leg, changed to the Park Drive End, reduced pace and soon Jandre van Wyk received Crawford’s raised finger.

Morne’s left-arm spin made two vital breakthroughs against a middle-order rearguard action. The inform all-rounder, Inland’s best player this season, deceived Roman Terblanche (32, 68 minutes, 44b, 6x4) with a perfect arm ball and got Wiaan van Zyl (37, 82 mins, 67b, 6x4) to pop a catch next over. The batsmen had rescued FS from 63 for six with a seventh-wicket stand of 81. Extras (24) was third-highest scorer.

Mbasa Gqadushe and Kevershan Padayachee negotiated 6.1 testing overs from fast bowlers Mario Saliwa and Gino Vries.

Saliwa’s return to his old hunting ground should draw members of his former club, Woodlands-based Lancashire.

During two seasons in PMB the popular ex-Inland man bowled with genuine pace, becoming a big hit. The King William’s Town-born Saliwa (24) has a rookie contract with the Eagles and has taken 55 wickets in 20 first-class matches at 34.67 with best bowling figures of 6/110 and best match figures of 11/166.

Apart from Saliwa and Vries, coach Rudi Steyn’s side have match-winners in Van Wyk, Von Rauenstein, Nieuwoudt, Beukes, Sesele and Wiaan van Zyl. Inland player/coach Doug Watson has every reason to feel satisfied.

• Meanwhile, in Pool A at Chatsworth Oval, 61.3 overs were lost. Toss-winning SWD were 153/5 at stumps off 42.3 overs against KZN Coastal with Wartburg export Rudi Hillerman on 32.

Ex-Boland left-hander Gerhard Strydom made 64, while Nick Hewer had 2-55 and 24-year-old Stanger-born Saidi Mhlongo 3-47. There were first-class debuts for Coastals’ Greg Fotheringham — about time for the KZN Premier League’s top run-scorer for the last two seasons — St Charles product Sarel Erwee and Dolphins rookie, SA U19 wicketkeeper Bradley Barnes.
