Varsity Rugby: PMB teams suffer defeat, but can hold heads high

2012-05-31 00:00

THE Maritzburg Collegians and PMB Varsity first teams had tough away matches in the Premier Division the past weekend.

Playing round seven for the Fidelity Security Moor Cup, PMB Collegians went down 26-10 to a strengthened Crusaders line-up in Durban North with Brendan Fourie getting their try and Conal Levin kicking a penalty and a conversion.

“As when we played College Rovers and Durban Collegians, we met Crusaders with their Sharks players in Jean Deysel and Conrad Hoffman in the team, as well as former Shark Monty Dumont, who only missed one kick,” Collegians president Tony Day told The Witness. “So it was tackle, tackle, tackle.

“We lost Calvin Channing early in the game [popped AC joint] followed by Damien Horeau at half-time [broken collarbone]. We left two certain tries on the park. We cannot ask the guys to give more than they are.”

PMB Varsity head coach Shawn van Rensburg was meanwhile forced to make the trek to play against Zululand Rhinos in Empangeni with a depleted side, as nine of his regulars in the starting line-up were either injured or had work commitments. “I was forced to put myself onto the bench and played the last 20 minutes,” Van Rensburg said.

“It was great being back on the field again, and the way things are looking I might have to do the same against Rovers, which is not ideal.”

In spite of this, Varsity only went down 31-15 to Zululand Rhinos and managed to deny them the bonus point.

Van Rensburg even scored his side’s last try. “It’s just always hard playing up there [Empangeni], it feels like everything is against you, but we will bounce back.”
