Varsity Shield: Impi on mission to make final

2013-03-08 00:00

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi are on course for a place in the final of the Varsity Shield rugby competition following their narrow 10-9 win over Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Vikings at the Peter Booysen Sports Park stadium on the Pietermaritzburg campus on Monday night.

“It was a very hard game and we knew it was going to be a huge one,” Impi head coach Shawn van Rensburg told The Witness yesterday.

“We defended really well and got out of trouble a few times due to good defence.”

Van Rensburg said the Impi were going into the next two games with a mission and huge commitment in a bid to reach the finals of the Varsity Shield on April 1.

“We might make a few changes within our squad, some players are very eager to get on the field and play, and that’s why it’s so awesome to have a good, strong squad,” said Van Rensburg.

“We have to keep on believing that we can play in that final, we have two fixtures left, and two wins would be great.

“If we get one win, we need a bonus point from the other match to make the final.

“It is amazing to be talking like this, especially were we have come from.”

Van Rensburg said the mood in the camp was positive. “We know we want to achieve something special this year.”

Impi play Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein on Monday.
