The kickoff is at 4 pm.

The players have been accommodated in Denison residence on the Pietermaritzburg campus with training sessions taking place at the team’s Peter Booysen Sports Park home ground off Golf Road.

UKZN Impi executive member Mark Schulze said the Investec Academy team features prospective professional rugby players selected from across South Africa and beyond.

It is under the tutelage of former Springbok coaches Ian McIntosh and Dick Muir, as well as rugby legends David Campese (Australia) and Murray Mexted (New Zealand), and UKZN alumnus and London Irish and Barbarians loose forward Ryan Strudwick.

Varsity head coach Shawn van Rensburg told The Witness yesterday that training had gone well.

“It’s been a very good start to the new Varsity Shield campaign and Friday’s match will give us a last chance to look at the new players before we make the final cut next week,” said Van Rensburg.

“The whole set-up is so much more professional and the players have responded well to it.”
