Varsity rue losing lead in close clash

2012-07-05 00:00

MISSING eight first team regulars, Maritzburg Varsity took second-placed Durban Collegians down to the wire at Varsity in their last outing and will rue that a 26-12 lead ended in a 36-26 defeat in this KZN Premier Division match.

There were some sterling performances, notably by regular second team centre Tyrone Brown. He put in some crunching tackles in midfield and made a few telling breaks against a side that included Sharks-contracted players in flyhalf Gouws Prinsloo and flank Peet Marais, both of whom played in the John Smit charity match with the Bok legend at King’s Park a short while ago.

“This game was ours for the taking,” said a disappointed Varsity manager Wayne le Roux. “Still it shows what good depth we have got.”

Varsity head coach Shawn van Rensburg, who again turned out at lock due to the injury crisis and players like regular captain and number eight Leon Stevens being rested, said basic errors cost the campus side towards the end. “The guys stood up well, though, and I am proud of them.”

There is no Premier or First Division this weekend, but tomorrow night on the Woodburn outer fields and at Young Lions there are a host of Third and Fourth Division Midlands knockout matches worth watching.
