Varsity rugby: 10 sides play for charity

2012-05-18 00:00

MARITZBURG Varsity are holding a bumper day of rugby tomorrow in aid of the Jess Foord Foundation’s centre for abused women.

Varsity’s “Rugby against Rape” campaign will see gate takings at Peter Booysen Sports Park donated to the cause.

The main game at 3 pm sees a battle between PMB Varsity and Old Boys — two sides in joint second place on the Fidelity Security Moor Cup log who enjoyed good wins last weekend.

A total of 10 sides will play in five fixtures at the Golf Road ground and for the first time in many years six University of KZN teams will play at the same venue on the same day.

“It’s almost 40 years since this last happened and indicates the rugby resurgence across the institution’s five campuses,” said PMB Varsity Rugby Club chairperson Roger Sheppard.

There will be “Tiny Tots” rugby played just prior to the main game, while Durban Varsity play the main curtain-raiser against PMB Waratahs.

The gates open at 11.30 am.
