Varsity tackle Collegians in PMB rugby derby

2008-08-07 00:00

One of the most anticipated Pietermaritzburg club rugby matches of the season takes place at Woodburn Stadium this evening.

A rivalry that stretches generations sees Maritzburg Varsity’s first XV muscle up to their PMB Collegians counterparts in an 8 pm kick-off.

Never mind that Varsity are a Premier Division team. Never mind that Collegians are in the First Division. These players bump into each other in town, train across from one another in the gym, know each other from schooldays and beyond.

The fact is they may respect each other as fellow players, but they represent different institutions that have been vying for club rugby supremacy in the capital city before even their grandparents were born.

Chairman Tony Day’s Pietermaritzburg Collegians Rugby Football Club is well over 100 years old.

It goes back to the days when motorcars on the capital city’s streets were as scarce as a litter-free lane in the modern CBD.

Varsity chairman Zak Binikos heads a club that began 97 years ago. Binikos speaks about his club and its history with a pride and passion that is equalled by Day and shared by each player in their bid to be top dogs in PMB.

Forget about the Sharks and Springboks for an evening and come along to Woodburn Stadium for a reminder of the manner in which post-school rugby should be played — for the love of the game and no thought of self-gain other than helping your team-mates in their quest to lift an age-old trophy.

The York and Lancaster Cup, a magnificent piece of silverware that goes to the Midlands Rugby Sub Union’s top club team, is within these players’ grasp. But at the end of the day only one captain can hold it high.

The other semi-final, to be held on a date still to be determined, will see Drakensberg against PMB Waratahs.
