Vavi apologises for ‘womanisers’ remark

2007-12-13 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — The general secretary of Cosatu, Zwelinzima Vavi, said yesterday that he regretted making the statement that those championing gender equity in the ANC were legendary womanisers.

His regrets, however, were extended only to those who were “genuinely hurt”.

Vavi was speaking on Radio SAFM.

“I agree that the ‘legendary womanisers’ comment might have hurt some people. For those genuinely hurt by the statement, I regret that,” Vavi said.

He said suggestions that he should apologise were unfair, as his statement had been distorted, misrepresented and sensationalised by the media.

Vavi maintained that certain people in the ANC were using the gender parity argument to advance their personal gains — and not for the genuine empowerment of women.

While addressing an SACP rally in Bekkersdal at the weekend, Vavi said those advocating 50/50 representation in the ANC were legendary womanisers who wanted more women in power for sinister reasons.

The national executive committee of the ANC — which met on Monday —resolved to demand an apology, as gender equity was a collective in the ANC.
