Vehicle woes: More turning to ombud

2010-05-18 00:00

A TOTAL of 19 700 vehicle owners who had problems with the motor industry consulted the Motor Industry Ombudsman (MIO) during 2009 — a 15,6% increase from the 17 039 owners who consulted the ombudsman in 2008.

More than a third of the complaints were resolved at “first contact”.

According to MIO statistics, the total value of the cases was almost R128,5 million, a 16% increase compared with the previous year, which has been attributed to the deteriorating road infrastructure and the rising cost of labour and auto parts.

Tyres were the biggest source of complaints, followed by poor service. These categories accounted for over 20% of the total.

The MIO noted that many vehicle owners failed to make monthly payments and many failed to adhere to service schedules as the recession took.
