Verulam: Resident heard the shots

2008-07-15 00:00

Verulam resident Rita Naidoo told The Witness that she and her 15-year-old daughter, Merissa, wept when they realised the hippo had been shot, after hearing three shots at 7.30 pm on Monday.

She said residents had hurried out of doors and that police had told her they did not want the media to know about the incident.

“This morning they dragged the body from the bush she ran into … Then they loaded the body up and went. It was very sad.”

Naidoo said that residents had watched Nkululeko while she had been in their area and had been able to stand a metre away from her while she grazed. “If she hurt anyone, it must have been because they provoked her. I am frustrated because we tried so hard to save it.”
