Veteran Sharks players will face Leopards

2010-09-30 00:00

IT is in with the old and out with the new as head coach John Plumtree has made five changes to his starting line-up for tomorrow night’s Currie Cup game against the struggling Leopards at King’s Park.

Veteran Andre Pretorius, the former Springbok, replaces rookie Pat Lambie at flyhalf in the most significant change. Lambie has started in all of the Sharks’ last 20 games (eight in the Super 14 and 12 in the Currie Cup).

The 31-year-old Pretorius, who has won 31 Test caps, recently returned from a serious hamstring injury which ended his Super 14 season for the Western Force before it had started.

He has played off the bench in the Sharks’ recent Currie Cup games, but this will be his first start for the Sharks.

“This is an opportunity for Andre,” Plumtreee said yesterday. “He’s been pretty patient and if anything happened to Pat (Lambie), we need to ensure that Andre has had a bit of game time at flyhalf. He’s only had brief bits and pieces of action and needs a good run.”

In the other backline change, Riaan Swanepoel replaces injured centre Stefan Terblanche.

Gerhard Mostert starts at lock in place of Alistair Hargreaves (foot injury) while flank Keegan Daniel, who takes over the captaincy from Terblanche, moves to number eight in place of Ryan Kankowski, who appeared before a disciplinary hearing yesterday. Jacques Botes takes over on the flank.

Plumtree has also rejigged his front-row with fit-again Bok tighthead Jannie du Plessis returning and Eugene van Staden switching to loosehead in place of Pat Cilliers.

“I’m impressed with Eugene’s current form,” said Plumtree, “but I’ve only seen him at tighthead. I want to see how he copes at loosehead, and then it’s about getting Jannie up to speed ahead of the play-offs.”
