Veteran amputee keeps on paddling

JAN de Neef enjoyed competing in the Dusi so much that he saw no reason why he should stop canoeing when his left arm was amputated after an accident eight years ago.

De Neef (53), who completed two Dusis before his accident, had a special prosthesis made with a geared latch that he ducttapes to his paddle.

Now a veteran of 10 races, De Neef trained greenhorn Nils Bunge (30) to partner him in a K2 for this year’s marathon.

“[The prosthesis] makes no difference. By now the guys have gotten used to it and accept me like any other paddler,” he says.

The prosthesis is attached to his shoulder and does not hinge at the elbow because, as he explains, paddlers pull and push with their shoulders and not by bending their arms.

De Neef admits to being “a bit slower because my arms are not that strong,” but Bunge jokes that he has to paddle extra hard to keep up with the veteran.
