Veteran tour ref says all in place for PMB race

2008-02-02 00:00

MARTIN Bruin from the Netherlands, the international referee for the cycling challenge starting today, said all the safety measures are in place.

Bruin, who speaks seven languages, has worked on the the Tour de France for six years.

He told Weekend Witness yesterday that his main job is to ensure that all race rules are respected by both riders and team managers.

He said all contenders will be tested by the African Anti-Doping Agency after each of the five races.

“This race particularly has an internationally high level of organisation,” he said.

Bruin also explained that the series will provide excellent preparation and training for international riders, especially as they will be racing in hotter conditions than they are used to, and in the southern hemisphere during the northern winter.

“This is an ideal opportunity to prepare and to come into good form,” he said.

Bruin said he loves South Africa’s fantastic weather and people.
