Veteren sporting greats to be feted

2010-07-26 00:00

VETERAN administrators and players involved in non-racial sport under the former South African Soccer League and the Federation Professional League in the midlands and northern KwaZulu-Natal are invited to a meeting at Allandale Primary School on Saturday.

Organisers Bryan Rupram and Ismail Bhamjee say the meeting is to look at how these champions of non-racial sport can be honoured.

They also want players of the only two local professional sides in the 1960s, Maritzburg City and Lincoln City, to attend. Both organisers reminisced on the clashes between Maritzburg City in their famous blue and white stripes and Lincoln City in their favourite red, blue and white.

Lincoln boasted the famous De Lange brothers, Claude and Popeye, while City were distinguished by captain Henry Petersen, Jagoo Govender, the late Narainsamy Reddy and Teddy Jamaloodeen.

Other greats were the late Thiri Rampath and “Remember Your Promise” Bhopella, who rarely failed to score a goal even if his side lost the match.

The meeting is also open to veterans who contributed in other codes of non-racial sport.

Players and officials from Estcourt, Ladysmith and Newcastle are also invited.
