THE woman whose teenage rescuer died while pursuing the man who robbed her near the Moses Mabhida Stadium, said she had no idea at the time the teen had died.

Nathan van Reenen was stabbed to death at Walter Gilbert Street near the Moses Mabhida Stadium at around 2.30 am on Saturday.

He was with friends in their vehicle near the stadium when they saw a woman being robbed by a man. Nathan went out to help the woman and the attacker ran off. He gave chase and caught the man. During the scuffle, it is alleged that the attacker stabbed Nathan in the neck. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

According to the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Raven Mundhree, the woman in her early 30s visited the Tiger Tiger nightclub and left with a friend at around 2.30 am.

“She said they had called for a taxi cab and she awaited its arrival. A man walked up to her and began chatting to her; acting very friendly. He then removed her phone, a Samsung Galaxy S4, from her back pocket and tried to flee,” said Mundhree.

The victim said she began to chase after the man and bystanders tried to assist her.

“She was shocked and retreated from the scene and was unaware that Nathan had been seriously injured. People had told her about the stabbing, but she did not know he had died.”

After learning about the death of Van Reenen, the victim contacted the police and has given them an official statement regarding the incident.

Mundhree has urged the public and witnesses to come forward with any information they may have regarding this incident.
